    Bronagh Starrs
    New Publication

Adolescent Configuration Styles, Parenting and Psychotherapy – A Relational Perspective

“Starrs integrates psychological theory, developmental neuroscience, deep clinical wisdom, and profound empathy into a highly readable guide that belongs in the hands of anyone who cares for teenagers and their parents.”
    - Lisa Damour, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of UntangledUnder Pressure, and The Emotional Lives of Teenager

“At last, we have a book which offers a framework for understanding the teenager’s psychological world. Starrs’ work is directed towards development and growth, not on the pathology of adolescence. A joy to read.”
-Irena Bezić, PhD,President of EAP (European Association for Psychotherapy) and Co-founder of Centar IGW Zagreb.

“There are few who can match Starrs’ depth of phenomenological attunement and degree of therapeutic sensibility with adolescents. She illustrates a masterful approach. A must-read for therapists, parents and anyone involved in the lives of teenagers.”
    - Richie Sadlier, bestselling author of Recovering and Let’s Talk

“I was enthralled by the examples, they relate so well to my own experience of young people, as a professional and a parent of four. This is essential reading for all who work therapeutically with adolescents.”
    - Sue Pattison, PhD,Co-Editor The Sage Handbook of Counselling Children and Young People.

“From beginning to end the book oozes rich and meaningful therapeutic experience. A must read for anyone engaged in therapeutic work with adolescents, or in any other domain, and for parents.”
    - Dominic McSherry, PhD, Reader in Psychology, Ulster University and Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Child and Adolescent Trauma

Couples Therapy Training Workshop for Therapists

“The Connection of Difference” 17th May -19th May 2024

The Falls Hotel and Spa Ennistymon, Co.Clare, Ireland

    with
Kevin McCann, H. Dip. GT and Favo Barbarello, M.Sc.
    Based on the model of
Robert W. Resnick, Ph. D. Rita F. Resnick, Ph. D.

MARRIAGE AND RELATIONSHIPS TODAY (irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identification) are, to a large extent based on the assumption that two individuals fuse into one. More than 50% of all first marriages end in divorce, as do approximately 75% of second marriages. Add to this the remaining secretly ―miserably married‖– those living lives of quiet (or not so quiet) desperation based on fear of being alone, fear of damaging the children, financial insecurity, religious doctrine, social stigma, etc. — and we begin to see the magnitude of the problem. If the Basic Human Dilemma for everyone from birth until death is: How to be connected to another, and maintain a self, then the western model of marriage makes this almost impossible. ―Two Become One” is the death knell to the movement required be- tween self and other to maintain connection – with contact and separation. In order to connect, there must be two

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION For over 50 years, Bob and Rita Resnick have introduced Gestalt therapy to thousands of therapists worldwide. Their cou- ples therapy model has allowed therapists, and couples, to benefit from an alternative view of coupling based on mutual respect, validation and acceptance of difference as a way to connect and resolve conflict in primary relationships. Kevin and Favo have been fortunate and proud to have been chosen by Bob and Rita to carry on their work on couples therapy and continue to teach it to therapists who want to work with couples in their practice, by learning to focus on process from a Gestalt prospective. The Resnicks have brought their model to Ireland for over 20 years. We hope to continue to keep this tradition and resource alive and dynamic, open to the changing field conditions of our times. This is a three-day Couples therapy training workshop for therapists and allied professionals who work with couples and those interested in learning to work with couples. You need not be part of a couple to attend. Each day, Favo and Kevin work live with real Model Couples to illustrate their way of encouraging couples to authentically represent themselves. This will be a practical, ―hands-on‖ workshop with daily supervised practice for all therapists in small supervised groups. All clinical work will be related to theory – to clarify and to make both more meaningful and practical. We want to focus on practice which will support therapists in their own work.

MODEL COUPLES NEEDED We are inviting 2 or 3 demonstration ― Model Couples‖ to join this workshop. Model couples participate in all discussions of the clinical work. The workshop is inclusive and transparent.

    Emotion-Focused Therapy - Level 1

A Four Day Training Workshop in Emotion Focused Therapy for individuals

    • Dublin, Ireland (Marino Institute of Education, Marino, Dublin)
    • 10am-5pm, 12th – 15th December 2023
    • Presented by Ladislav Timulak, PhD
    • Co-facilitated by Daragh Keogh, D.Couns.Psych & Sonja Schmitt, D.Couns.Psych
    • Fee: €875 (€800 early bird bookings made before 30/09/2023)

Training is open to qualified clinical/counselling psychologists and accredited counsellors/ psychotherapists and is the first step in becoming a certified EFT therapist with the International Society for Emotion-Focused Therapy (ISEFT).

Ladislav Timulak, PhD is Professor in Counselling Psychology at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, where he is Course Director of the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. Ladislav (“Laco” read “Latso”) is involved in various psychotherapy trainings in Ireland and internationally. His main research interest is psychotherapy research, particularly the development of emotion-focused therapy (EFT). He currently is developing this form of therapy as a transdiagnostic treatment for depression, anxiety, and related disorders. He is also researching the use of mental health interventions delivered online. He has written or co-written ten books, more than 100 peer reviewed papers and chapters in both his native language, Slovak, and in English. His most recent EFT books include Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy: An Emotion-Focused Approach (2015), Transforming Generalized Anxiety: An Emotion-Focused Approach (with James McElvaney; 2018); and Transdiagnostic Emotion-Focused Therapy (with co-author Daragh Keogh) published by the American Psychological Association (2021). He serves on various editorial boards and, in the past, coedited Counselling Psychology Quarterly. He maintains a part-time private practice.

Workshop Content: Dr. Timulak, will lead a 4-day introductory and experiential workshop on EFT as a treatment for working with complex emotions in individual psychotherapy. The approach will be illustrated with video recorded case studies, and significant time will be given to experiential exercises in small break out groups where participants will be supported in learning core EFT tasks. The phases of treatment will be described and the specific processes that led to the resolution of the clients’ presentation will be highlighted and illustrated.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based experiential psychotherapy in the humanistic tradition of Person-Centered and Gestalt therapy, influenced by family & systemic therapy as well as ongoing research in affective neuroscience. EFT is established as a treatment for depression, trauma, and in its couples’ format, relationship distress. It has also been applied to the treatment of eating disorders, and most recently, to the treatment of anxiety, specifically social anxiety and generalized anxiety. EFT is a unique empirically based approach, based on methods designed to help people accept, express, regulate, make sense of, and transform emotion. It focuses on the development of emotional intelligence and on the importance of secure relationships. Based on emotion, attachment, and growth theory, it helps people identify which of their emotions they can trust and rely on as adaptive guides and which of their emotions are residues of painful memories that have become maladaptive and thus need to be changed. With the help of the therapist's empathic understanding and the use of experiential methods, clients learn how to make healthy contact with and transform, feelings, memories, thoughts, and physical sensations that have been ignored, feared or avoided.

    Places are limited.

The early bird rate applies when the full fee is paid before 30/09/2023.

For all enquiries and bookings please contact: ieftireland@gmail.com

The Institute of Emotion Focused Therapy, Ireland is an accredited isEFT institute.
