    • Dublin, Ireland (Marino Institute of Education, Marino, Dublin)
    • 10am-5pm, 12th – 15th December 2023
    • Presented by Ladislav Timulak, PhD
    • Co-facilitated by Daragh Keogh, D.Couns.Psych & Sonja Schmitt, D.Couns.Psych
    • Fee: €875 (€800 early bird bookings made before 30/09/2023)

Training is open to qualified clinical/counselling psychologists and accredited counsellors/ psychotherapists and is the first step in becoming a certified EFT therapist with the International Society for Emotion-Focused Therapy (ISEFT).

Ladislav Timulak, PhD is Professor in Counselling Psychology at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, where he is Course Director of the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. Ladislav (“Laco” read “Latso”) is involved in various psychotherapy trainings in Ireland and internationally. His main research interest is psychotherapy research, particularly the development of emotion-focused therapy (EFT). He currently is developing this form of therapy as a transdiagnostic treatment for depression, anxiety, and related disorders. He is also researching the use of mental health interventions delivered online. He has written or co-written ten books, more than 100 peer reviewed papers and chapters in both his native language, Slovak, and in English. His most recent EFT books include Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy: An Emotion-Focused Approach (2015), Transforming Generalized Anxiety: An Emotion-Focused Approach (with James McElvaney; 2018); and Transdiagnostic Emotion-Focused Therapy (with co-author Daragh Keogh) published by the American Psychological Association (2021). He serves on various editorial boards and, in the past, coedited Counselling Psychology Quarterly. He maintains a part-time private practice.

Workshop Content: Dr. Timulak, will lead a 4-day introductory and experiential workshop on EFT as a treatment for working with complex emotions in individual psychotherapy. The approach will be illustrated with video recorded case studies, and significant time will be given to experiential exercises in small break out groups where participants will be supported in learning core EFT tasks. The phases of treatment will be described and the specific processes that led to the resolution of the clients’ presentation will be highlighted and illustrated.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based experiential psychotherapy in the humanistic tradition of Person-Centered and Gestalt therapy, influenced by family & systemic therapy as well as ongoing research in affective neuroscience. EFT is established as a treatment for depression, trauma, and in its couples’ format, relationship distress. It has also been applied to the treatment of eating disorders, and most recently, to the treatment of anxiety, specifically social anxiety and generalized anxiety. EFT is a unique empirically based approach, based on methods designed to help people accept, express, regulate, make sense of, and transform emotion. It focuses on the development of emotional intelligence and on the importance of secure relationships. Based on emotion, attachment, and growth theory, it helps people identify which of their emotions they can trust and rely on as adaptive guides and which of their emotions are residues of painful memories that have become maladaptive and thus need to be changed. With the help of the therapist's empathic understanding and the use of experiential methods, clients learn how to make healthy contact with and transform, feelings, memories, thoughts, and physical sensations that have been ignored, feared or avoided.

    Places are limited.

The early bird rate applies when the full fee is paid before 30/09/2023.

    Irish Society of Jungian Analysts
    in conjunction with the
    Irish Analytical Psychology Association
    Presents live on Zoom

    Two-Part Series
    Thursdays 16th & 30th November 2023
    7.30pm – 9.00pm each evening (Irish time)

“The Raven”: A tale of Abandonment, Loss and Self-realisation
    Ann Yeoman, PhD
    Jungian Analyst (Zürich)

All fairy-tales, according to Marie-Louise von Franz, concern the process of individuation. Most fairy-tales provide a vignette of one particular stage in the life-long process of individuation. “The Raven”, however, is surprisingly long, meandering, challenging, and fascinating. It strikes many readers as an amalgam of a number of familiar fairy-tale motifs, as we encounter an enchanted princess, a witchy old woman who lives deep in the woods, giants, unreachable castles atop glass mountains, robbers and more. Our tale is long and meandering because it addresses the long, meandering, and difficult task of realising and bringing into life the ‘personal spirit’ that has suffered early, pre-verbal trauma and gone into hiding. “The Raven” explores the extraordinarily complex process of ‘redeeming’ the personal spirit, enabling it to become an integral part of the conscious personality. The tale is endlessly rewarding; it opens the reader to a deeper understanding of the mysteries and dynamics of the psyche at each reading. Ann invites us to join her on a journey of discovery as we plumb the depths of this tale together.

Ann Yeoman graduated from the C.G. Jung Institute, Zürich, is a member of IAAP, and currently lives and practises in Devon, UK. Before returning ‘home’ to Devon in 2008, she worked as Dean of Students at New College, University of Toronto, where she also designed and taught a suite of courses in Jungian Studies. Ann has lectured and offered workshops internationally; she is the author of Now or Neverland: Peter Pan and the myth of eternal youth (Inner City Books); and, with Kevin Lu, C.G. Jung’s Collected Works: The Basics, available December, 2023 as part of The Basics Series published by Routledge. Ann has an abiding interest in the endless possibilities of meaning and wisdom to be mined through the study of all products of psyche, with a soft spot for the fairy-tale.

QQI Level 8 Minor Award in Trauma Informed Therapy StudiesThis innovative part-time programme in validated by QQI.

    Introduction

A recent national study into Trauma, PTSD and complex PTSD in the Republic of Ireland found that 82.3% of respondence had lifetime exposure to one or more traumatic events, with almost 68% reporting two or more traumatic events (Hyland et al, 2021). Likewise, in a global context, research has indicated that 70% of people have been exposed to a traumatic event (Benjet et al, 2015). The overwhelming evidence of the ubiquitous nature of trauma exposure tells us that mental help professionals need to be trauma informed.

Trauma informed therapy is a way of working with clients that recognises how traumatic experiences can impact on all domains of being across human development, including behavioural, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. Trauma can impact relational styles, attachment styles, and both family systems and social structures, through the influences of culture and the environment. At the same time, human beings experience complex intrapersonal and interpersonal relational dynamics, childhood difficulties, as well as sociocultural and economic disadvantages that are problematic, but which are not traumatising. Therefore, the objective in training in Trauma Informed Practices is to understand what trauma is, and what it is not. The purpose of the IICP College Trauma Informed module is to support learners in increasing their understanding of trauma through theoretical knowledge, practice based experiential exercises, and group work.
