FREE EVENT: Twice Survived, Forever Changed: A Candid Conversation About Postpartum Psychosis with Aaisha Alvi

Tuesday, July 29th at 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM - Takes Place Via Zoom

The Perinatal Mental Health Institute would like to invite you to a completely free event for professionals to hear the lived experience of Postpartum Psychosis.

Why This Training Matters

Postpartum psychosis is a severe but treatable maternal mental health emergency that remains dangerously misunderstood in medical settings and public consciousness. This condition affects approximately 1-2 per 1,000 births, yet healthcare providers often lack the knowledge to recognize and respond appropriately. The consequences of this knowledge gap can be life-threatening, leaving mothers and families in crisis without adequate support or intervention.

Drawing from her powerful book, A Mom Like That: A Memoir of Postpartum Psychosis, Aaisha will share her harrowing journey through postpartum psychosis, which she experienced twice – first following her daughter's birth and again after a miscarriage at 14 weeks. Her story reveals a troubling pattern of dismissal, having been turned away five times while desperately seeking help during a life-threatening mental health crisis. Through her candid account, attendees will gain crucial insights into this overlooked condition and learn how proper awareness and response can literally save lives.

What You'll Learn:

  • Understanding the distinct symptoms of postpartum psychosis and how they differ from other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders
  • Recognizing the dangerous knowledge gaps that continue to exist in healthcare settings
  • Learning how increased awareness and proper response can save lives
  • Developing skills to recognize warning signs and advocate effectively for mothers in crisis
  • Understanding the critical importance of immediate intervention and appropriate treatment
  • Gaining insight into the lived experience of postpartum psychosis from a survivor's perspective
  • Participating in a Q&A section to address your specific questions and concerns
