Shadow Side and the Artist’s Escape

MTU Cork School of Music onUnion Quay is hosting a unique exhibition of paintings by artist Marie Bryan from 8th January 2025 to 4th February 2025.

Launching on Wednesday, 8th January at 6pm, Shadow Side and the Artist’s Escape is a collection of twelve acrylic paintings, created during Summer 2024.

In a personal exploration of artistic expression, Marie investigates her reaction, as an artist, to severe trauma. Painting at a time when she was undergoing trauma therapy, she found herself tackling her difficult subjects indirectly, creating metaphorical paintings which seem surreal.

“I respond to adversity with fun, invented antidotes. I exemplify my escapism, on canvas. I note that artistic escapism has always been my coping mechanism. My imaginative, metaphorical paintings illustrate the dream world that I love”.

A native of Cork, Marie Bryan is a student of Fine Art at MTU Crawford College of Art and Design. Her collection of portraits of residents of Cork Simon Community is currently touring the Cork City Libraries. New to art, she left careers in dairy farming and the civil service, following the death of her husband. She is a survivor of severe childhood trauma.
