Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) offers a unique blend of two solid therapeutic approaches. These two therapies are on the cutting-edge of evidence-based psychotherapy today.
During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn about common problems that often complicate interventions for depression and anxiety such as avoidance, rumination, self-criticism and intrusive emotional memories. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on how best to integrate a range of interventions and techniques to support patients presenting anxiety and depression. The UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) has endorsed MBCT as an effective treatment for prevention of relapse. Research indicates that MBCT may be as “effective” as anti-depressants for preventing relapse in recurrent depression (University of Oxford in Lancet Journal, 21 April, 2015).
This workshop will be presented with a combination of seminar, discussion, meditation, visual presentation, and reflection within a skills-based learning environment.
The following themes will be explored:
- Mindfulness and Cognitive Therapy: an experiential focus highlighting clinical applications, evidence and neuroscience.
- Attention, Awareness and the Attitudinal qualities of Mindfulness
- Senses, cognition and experience
- Metacognition and Self-regulation, Mindfulness and Mood Disorders
Apply the principles of the CBT model and understand the development of depression and anxiety, case formulation and plan and implement treatment interventions for working through depression and anxiety. Help clients establish clear goals and objectives including the importance of behavioural activation and psycho-education. MBCT was developed to help by teaching clients skills to recognise and respond constructively to thoughts and feelings associated with relapse, aiming to prevent a downward spiral into depression. MBCT combines the problem-solving approach of CBT with mindfulness techniques and practice. These skills are designed to focus awareness on the “here-and-now” instead of having unhelpful thoughts about the past and future.
Facilitator: Gerry Cunningham has been extensively trained in mindfulness-based approaches and studied for three years at Department of Psychiatry, Oxford University under the direction of Mark Williams (MSt in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy). He has attended training in mindfulness and cognitive therapy with Zindel Segal, John Teasdale, Aaron Beck and mindfulness training retreats with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Jack Kornfield, Daniel Siegel, Christina Feldman and the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at Bangor University.
Dunboyne Castle Hotel is ideally nested in the Meath countryside, yet conveniently on Dublin’s doorstep. Only 12 minutes from the M50 and located on the 70 Dublin Bus route and close to Dunboyne Train Station.
