Avocado Girl

by Deirdre Madden

Wooden and hidden in green flesh
Wrapped in a case of leather
Like a pear.

Holding herself tightly
Controlled and solid
Difficult to crack the outer layer.

Softer inside and sweeter too
From sun and smiles
And days gone by.
Feeling free.

But deep in her core
Is the heart of her pain
And centre of her power
Where the tears have been stored
From midnight hours.

Green is the colour
And wood is the fusion
Keeping the illusion
Of calm.

But now there are cracks
In the tough outer shell
And the voice and the soul
Begin to yell.

It’s time to come out
And play with the stars.
They are waiting for you.
They were always there.
Looking for you
To shine.
