About this event: 

Dr Kielty Oberlin will introduce the key concepts and skills that underpin a ‘whole’ person understanding and a recovery-orientated approach to the care of eating disorders (ED) and disordered eating (DE) and the comorbid conditions that commonly occur with them. She will also be exploring with you the skills that you already have and use currently in your treatment of clients, and introducing new ones (including some you may have, but have not considered to be assets yet).

Exploring the Types of Eating Disorders:

  • Reviewing the Diet to Disorder Spectrum of Healthy Eating – How our Recovery work is likened to a Revolution against a Dieting Culture
  • How diagnostic classifications impact our engagement with the person and treatment
  • Reviewing our understanding of the role & function eating/exercise and body image compulsions

Why Understanding Recovery from an Eating Disorder is so Important:

  • Exploring the role a clear definition of Recovery plays in treatment
  • Understanding Helpful, Hindering & Essential aspects of the recovery process
  • Identifying the Tensions that surround ED recovery and their impact on successful outcomes

Current Risk in Eating Disorder treatment & recovery:

  • Understanding suicide, co-morbidities and self-harm are the norm, not the exception
  • Managing denial, ambivalence and resistance to care
  • Examine the real impact on the practitioner and team working with people with eating disturbances

Building & Maintaining Recovery-Focused Relationships:

  • Identify elements that hinder practitioners from empathetically engaging with the person
  • Examine the components of ED therapeutic engagement
  •  Identify strategies / skills helpful for maintaining and sustaining empathetic engagement

Explore Assessment & Treatment:

  • Assessing severity of eating disturbances in presenting clients Using the Multi-disciplinary Approach to care in real practice
  • Service delivery and team collaboration
  • Reviewing eating disorders and treatment in the time of COVID and beyond



About Kielty

Kielty Oberlin, PhD has been working with people affected by eating, body image, worth and identity issues since moving to Ireland from the USA nearly 25 years ago. Not only does Kielty work with individuals and groups in private practice, she also lectures in TCD in the Schools of Psychology and Nursing on all topics related to Eating Disorders, provides training seminars and workshops to professionals looking to specialise in the field, has authored a textbook and frequently appears in the media raising awareness to Eating Disorders, Disordered Eating, the Spectrum of Healthy Eating and spreading the message that whole-person Recovery is Possible.
