    MSc Addiction Counselling & Psychotherapy

There is a growing awareness of the widespread harm caused by addiction to individuals, families and society at large and an evolving shift of reliance from a medically based model of treatment to engaging in Talking Therapies.

In an experiential and participative environment, this course offers students the opportunity to acquire key skills and theoretical knowledge to effectively engage with the addiction recovery process.

    Who is this course for?

The MSc Addiction Counselling & Psychotherapy is a comprehensive professional training course, focused on working therapeutically with people dealing with addiction. This course is aimed at graduates who are currently working, or plan to work, in addiction services, including counsellors and psychotherapists, doctors, nurses, youth workers, social carers, social workers, psychologists and those who wish solidify and enhance their qualifications whilst gaining contemporary theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The course is validated, subject to review, by Middlesex University, designed to supplement trainees’ existing qualifications and is not a stand-alone counselling qualification. This course will also serve professionals within the addiction field who wish to pursue accreditation with the Addiction Counsellors Ireland (ACI) While the ACI does not accredit courses, it does accredit individual applicants taking into account training, qualifications and experience in the field. The MSc Addiction Counselling & Psychotherapy programme is designed to fulfil a number of these essential criteria.

What are the benefits of doing this course?

On completion of the course, you will have developed an advanced competency and proficiency working with clients presenting with a wide range of addiction issues in a variety of contemporary settings. You will more fully understand the complex and challenging nature of addiction and recovery, whilst prizing the agency of the individual. You will be well placed to influence attitudes and affect policy in the workplace, community and society. The programme complements the ‘no wrong door’ approach as advocated within national policy which broadens career opportunities, such as those within the health service, private practice, and work within voluntary settings and mental health organisations.

    What will you learn?

The course is designed to give learners a working understanding of the theories, process and dynamics of addiction in an ever-changing biopsychosocial context with a strong focus on effective, evidence-based approaches to treatment and counselling. With the individual at the heart of any treatment approach, students will be equipped with a variety of clinical skills applicable to the complex presentation of addiction that spans diverse populations. The programme addresses the ever-pervasive influence of the internet and how it exacerbates the deleterious effects of behavioural addictions such as compulsive gambling, sexual addiction and gaming. The role of the family is evaluated in addition to broader mental health and dual diagnosis issues. Students will experience addiction from a multidisciplinary viewpoint during site visits and within reflexive clinical practice in addition to developing proficiency in three different talk therapy modalities.

Do you think it is possible for individuals to repress a memory for years and then recover it? What would that mean for the memory being recovered? Is it appropriate to question the possibility or validity of a recovered memory? The ongoing controversial debate around memory repression and recovery may have serious implications for psychotherapeutic theory and practice. As practicing psychotherapists, we want to know your valued opinions and experiences.

My name is Owen Coyle and I’m a Masters student in Applied Psychology. I am looking for practitioners of psychotherapy that are currently working in Ireland to complete a 10 minute survey on memory repression and recovery – please follow the link below:

    IN PERSON GROUP SUPERVISION
    A Gestalt Relational Model

    Sandra Mullen
    Psychotherapist, Accredited Supervisor, MIAHIP, MICP

Supervision is a space for counsellors, psychotherapists, and allied health professionals to develop their skills, protect from burnout and explore their own personal and professional development. It is a dynamic learning and development process in which both parties learn and grow together. (Page & Wosket 199:4).  The Gestalt Relational model of Group supervision forms the foundation of a supervisory relationship based on the philosophical principles of existential phenomenology, field theory and dialogic existentialism, a relationship that can hold safely what Yontef describes as our ‘Moment to moment experience of the ‘between’ and of the mutual influencing and co creation of meaning’ (Yontef 2002:15). This supervision group will be a holding space for therapists where they can be supported to stay with and reflect on how they impact and are impacted by their clients. Providing the opportunity where they can be curious and learn from their experience of what is evoked in them, including their struggles, doubts, and growing edges as they emerge in the group and ultimately to support them in providing a safe holding space for their clients.

    Who is the group for?

The group is for professionals who work in a process and integrative manner with a varied caseload. It is open to Accredited and Pre accredited Counsellors and Psychotherapists.

Sandra is a Gestalt Psychotherapist and Supervisor accredited with IAHIP and ICP. THE HIGH ART OF HELPING

CONSTELLATION WORK WITH HORSES AN EXPERIENTIAL WORKSHOP ASSISTED BY HORSE PRESENCE AND WISDOM

Sunday June 11th 2023 Castlefergus Quinn Co Clare
    Fee: Euro 200.00

Helpfulness is a beautiful human quality, and helping in a professional way is a special Art. People often feel drawn to work with others and to help them in a special way. This pull can come from a deep love and loyalty that stems from within our own family system, our own herd.

To help in a healthy way, it is important to be able to understand what it is that has drawn us into our chosen profession and to be curious about what it is our hearts are longing for.

The ground-breaking work of Bert Hellinger, coming from his training in psychoanalysis to his systemic family therapy, allows us to see ourselves through a lens which brings to light our connections, loyalties and bonds, conscious and unconscious, across the generations.

The methodology of 'the constellation' uses human representatives to represent family members, issues or internal parts of ourselves. We use this lens and methodology and we include the presence and wisdom of the horses as representatives in the family field. Clearing our own 'field' allows us to work with clarity about our role as ‘Helpers’. This serves as a protection for the people we work with and avoids burnout for ourselves. In order to give in a healthy way, we must first be able to receive in a healthy way. Then we may no longer project our unconscious entanglements, our early unmet needs on to our co-workers and clients.

When we can experience being separate and connected, then we ourselves, and those we work with, become freer to move and heal in a healthy way. Helping at this level is 'a high art'.

These innovative workshops are offered to people who work with others. We use a team approach. The facilitating team consists of an equine specialist, mental health professionals and most importantly 'the horses'. All activities take place on the ground and you need no previous experience with horses to participate.

The structure of the day is based on Bert Hellinger's work on 'The high art of helping' and the three basic systemic principles of relationship: Belonging, Reciprocity and Order: things being in their right place.

In these, one day workshops we prepare to enter 'another's' field, (the others we work with). Participants are invited to come into a deeper awareness of themselves within their family field, their family herd. You are invited to come with an open heart and a respectful willingness to explore how the need to belong has shaped you. These workshops often facilitate a very deep inner movement whereby things come to the surface and into awareness in a healing and gentle way.

When we work in the presence of horses, observing their behaviour and at the same time being aware of what happens inside us as we allow ourselves to become attuned to them, we find that they can teach us to be present to our true selves, mindfully in alignment, separate and connected.

Horses are such authentic representatives and they mirror for us in an extraordinary way when we are present and open to their wisdom. As we enter the energetic field of the horse we can deepen our capacity for a transformational process in a truly profound way.
