Details of workshop
In this workshop, we will explore the subject of obsessions and compulsions – often diagnosed today as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) - as we meet these in psychotherapeutic work. The prevailing literature on OCD emphasises the use of specific kinds of cognitive interventions, alongside medication, and generally pays little attention to wider issues of the inner world of the people concerned and the emotional developments underpinning these symptoms.

The workshop will explore some ideas that have arisen from the psychoanalytic literature, especially from object relations perspectives, as well as drawing on clinical practice and research. It will outline how a psychodynamic lens might help both in making sense of these and in helping us in the directions we take with our clients. It will also highlight the sense of meaning that are in these thoughts and behaviours, what underlie these and the complex path toward their resolution.

This will be a highly-interactive workshop, and active engagement is encouraged throughout.

Presenter: John O’Connor
John O’Connor is a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, Clinical Psychologist, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at Trinity College Dublin. He has a particular interest in the therapeutic relationship and the significance of this for assisting in the process of change/development in this work. John has also a strong interest in individual and group supervisory processes and the development of capacity within these relationships. He has published on a wide variety of areas, including in relation to the experiences of people with obsessions and compulsions.
