Research Title: The Importance of “Being Seen”: Exploring Psychotherapists’ Experience of “Being Seen” in Therapy and in Clinical Practice.

Researcher: Catherine Norris, MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, Turning Point Institute.

Summary: In part fulfilment of my MSc, I am researching psychotherapists' experiences of “being seen” in their personal therapy and how, if at all, it influences their clinical practice.

“Being seen” is defined the client’s relational experience of “being” in therapy where they are “seen” by the therapist in a particular way. “Being” is the present moment brought into consciousness. “Seeing” is the recognition of the whole person in that present moment.

Participants sought: Qualified and accredited psychotherapists/psychoanalysts working in Ireland who have had the experience of “being seen” in their personal psychotherapy practice.

Data collection and time commitment: The method of data collection and time commitment required from participants is:

    • Participation in one semi-structured interview between 40 and 60 minutes in length.

    • Interviews can be conducted online or in person.

    • Interviews can be scheduled at a time that suits participants.

    • Interviews will be recorded and transcribed.

    • Participants will be anonymised.

    • Data will be stored and protected in accordance with relevant guidelines and legal requirements.

    The deadline for participation:
    30th June 2025.

Join The Perinatal Mental Health Institute for An Essential Training on Trauma-Informed Perinatal Care

The Trauma Sensitive Birth Provider: Essential Skills for Perinatal Practice with Michelle Flynn, Perinatal Psychotherapist

    Monday June 9th at 10am to 11:30am

    Takes Place Via Zoom

Cost €20 – Includes Certificate of Attendance, Access to Recorded Version and All Resources Mentioned in the Training

    Why This Training Matters

Many birthing people have experienced previous trauma, which can emerge during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Without trauma-informed care, standard interventions may inadvertently retraumatize clients. This training equips you with practical skills to prevent trauma activation, respond effectively when it occurs, and support your clients through vulnerable perinatal experiences.

Learn evidence-based approaches to support clients through pregnancy and childbirth when previous trauma experiences are present. In this essential 90 minute webinar Michelle will cover:

    • Practical "Trauma CPR" techniques for acute trauma activation during pregnancy, birth, or postpartum care
    • Creating personalized, trauma-informed birth plans that empower clients and increase feelings of safety and agency
    • Developing skills in recognizing trauma activation patterns specific to the perinatal context
    • Implementing effective real-time interventions for clients experiencing flashbacks, dissociation, or acute trauma responses
    • How previous reproductive trauma affects current pregnancy experiences and birth expectations
    • Approaches for empowering clients with trauma histories through trauma-informed language and practices
    • Self-care strategies and building resilience as a practitioner witnessing and supporting clients through potentially triggering experiences
    • Skills to prevent vicarious trauma in your practice

Michelle Flynn is an IACP accredited Psychotherapist and founder of An Croí Beag Psychotherapy. Michelle holds a Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy as well as a Higher Diploma in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and a level 9 Certificate in Perinatal Mental Health. Michelle has additional training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy, and Parent-Infant mental health through the Anna Freud

Centre in London and is currently training in Somatic Psychotherapy. She has a particular interest working with perinatal mental health, postnatal depression, traumatic births, perinatal loss, and anxiety.
