Research Title:

Counsellor Acceptance of Non-abstinent Recovery Goals for Problematic Substance Use in Ireland

Dear colleagues,

My name is Erin Moriarty, and I am in my final year of the MSc in Pluralistic Counselling & Psychotherapy at IICP College. I am currently recruiting participants for a quantitative study as part of my research dissertation.

Summary of research:

The definition of recovery has evolved in recently years and led to the recognition of non-abstinent recovery, when an individual improves their quality of life while continuing to use drugs and/or alcohol. While international attitudes towards non-abstinent recovery vary, this has never been examined in Ireland. This study aims to fill this gap by examining counsellors’ attitudes toward working with clients on non-abstinent recovery goals and whether this varies as a function of different client and counsellor characteristics.

Eligible participants:

Student, pre-accredited, and accredited counsellors who, currently or in the past, have worked with people engaging in problematic drug and/or alcohol use in the Republic of Ireland.

Data collection and time commitment:

If you would like to participate in this study, please follow the survey link below:

https://forms.gle/7vHTr8A5b9wELTgg8

The survey should take no longer than 5-10 minutes. If you have contacts who may be interested in participating, I would be grateful if you could share this information with them.

In a gesture of appreciation, participants will have the option to enter a drawing for €75.

Deadline for participation: 28th February 2026.

Additional information about the study design, risks, and benefits are available at the top of the survey. For questions or further information, please contact me directly.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
