There will be no fire in the new room
only a painting as hearth, unframed,
a closed gate, path and woods behind.
Something we can look into when our eyes
glance but cannot meet the other’s gaze,
knowing we can choose
to look or avert,
open, step in
or falter this side of fear
until tomorrow
like we did yesterday.
