    Tending Our Futures 2022

    with Emma Philbin Bowman, MIAHIP

    October 1 - December 3,

    Saturday mornings* 9-11am on zoom*

Tending our Futures will appeal to those seeking a deep, textured context in which to freshly sense our own lives. We each have unique sensibilities and specific histories; this course enables us to embrace the wide span of our lives in support of our ripening.

    'The digested past is presence…'

    Thomas Hubl

Working in a small group with an emphasis on presence and integration, each week focuses on a specific theme: our relationship to fate and destiny, how we embody our regrets and losses, aligning with aging, and deepening our evolutionary capacity and availability to emergent futures. As we move through the course, participants are supported in embracing our past, arriving more fully in our present and supporting our future possibilities, (including our aging and passing). As we share this territory with others, we support one anothers unique ripening.

Many therapists are drawn to this work, and CPD points are available. Link to IAHIP special pricing here: If you have any questions, email Emma by September 24th to arrange a brief consult: emmapb@me.com

Throughout the course, live sessions are complemented by brief, pre-recorded video and audio reflections on Teachable. This course is drawn from her life-long immersion in philosophy, literature, depth psychology and spiritual practice, and from sources as diverse as Leonard Cohen, Christopher Bollas and Thomas Hubl. Emma has a passion for sharing theory in rich, accessible ways, and for the beauty of exploring in small intentional groups.

    Voices of Past Participants

‘The themes are resonating strongly with me long after the course has finished. The content was superb.

Emma’s ability to communicate complex concepts and themes in simple language is a gift…’

    Maria, Cork

‘…deeply valuable in relation to where I am currently in my life experience; it raised my awareness of nourishing my future, now…’

    Sylvia Rowe, (retired psychotherapist)

‘I loved the content, and the format was perfect; I do feel more open and loving and authentic as a human being since the course. It’s subtle, but there is a gently expanded inner spaciousness…’

    Kieran McKeown

One of the most beautiful pieces for me was I knew I had changed by being part of the group & engaging with the themes. It felt like such a gentle process.

A slow gentle change over time that I hardly noticed I was changing, until it was there. It felt like the themes seeped into me as I was held in a very safe space with Emma and the other participants. It really was a beautiful experience and I loved being part of this group. I would highly recommend Emma and this course.

    MD, Psychotherapist

'It’s hard to do justice to the course. To know it is possible to communicate with people from a place of authenticity is grounding, comforting, uplifting, hope inducing and powerful…it has allowed me to seek out this deeper connection with people around me…'

    Jean, Pharmacist

    Are you interested in Self-Care?

Then may I draw your attention to my  research study entitled ‘The Paradox of Self-care: Psychotherapists lived experiences of Self-Care’, as part of my Masters study in  Psychotherapy at DCU. The aim of the research study is to explore the lived experiences of self-care of psychotherapists practicing in Ireland.

I am looking to recruit 15 participants for this Reflexive Thematic Analysis Qualitative study.

Principle investigator, Dr. Rita Glover is an experienced research supervisor. She has supervised PhD Doctorate and M.Sc. students who have conducted qualitative studies which involved descriptive and hermeneutic phenomenology, thematic analysis in Dublin City University. Dr. Glover lectures, nationally and internationally, at M.Sc. and Doctoral level on psychotherapy and psychotherapy supervision. The research procedures will be carried out by Pauline Heffernan, a student on the DCU taught MSc in Psychotherapy programme. Pauline is an accredited member if the Irish Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapist. Pauline has a BA Hons in Psychology and a BA Hons in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

You are eligible to engage in this study if you are an accredited, practicing psychotherapist, aged 30yrs and over, living and working in the Republic of Ireland.  You will be invited to take part in a semi-structured interview taking place in person, or online, whichever is most convenient for you.  The interview will be approximately 1hr in duration and an audio recording will be made.  Your participation in the study is voluntary.

The term self-care is defined by Barnett & Cooper (2009), as the application of a range of activities, for the purpose of psychological wellbeing, resilience, and good physical health. Research has identified the paradox of Self-care, when psychotherapists who are dedicated to helping others, often find it difficult to take time to care and nourish themselves. The identification of the importance of the Self of the therapist in the therapy outcome, and the placing of psychotherapist self-care as an ethical issue for professional practice is indicative of the importance of psychotherapists endeavouring to care for both themselves and their clients, in their clinical practice.

If you would like to learn more about this study, please contact me by email pauline.heffernan7@mail.dcu.ie
