    Research Title

An exploration into counsellors’ experiences of student suicidality in the higher education institutes of Ireland.

    Researcher Introduction

Joe Donohue is an accredited member of the IAHIP and has worked for a number of years with students in higher education and previously in a crisis counselling service with clients at risk of suicide and self-harm. Joe is interested in researching counsellors working in the higher education sector with experiences of student suicidality.

    The Research

In light of recent Irish national reports and studies, such as My World Survey II (2020) and the USI National Report on Mental Health (2019), which indicated the prevalence of suicidality among students and an ever-increasing demand for counselling in higher education institutions, this study seeks to understand the experiences of working with suicidal students from the perspective of counsellors at the front line of higher education institutions in Ireland.

    Participants that are being sought

This study seeks participants who are fully accredited psychotherapists with over three years of experience counselling students in Irish higher education institutions and who have experienced suicidality (suicidal ideation or intent) among their student clients.

The method of data collection and time commitment required from participants

If you are interested in participating in this study, a plain language statement with further details about the research will be emailed to potential participants. Data collection will be collected via an online interview on ZOOM or in person if you prefer. The interview will last 45 minutes to 60 minutes.

    The deadline for participation

The research study will be conducted between February and May 2023.

    Individual and Group Supervision

I would like to advertise the model of psychotherapy supervision and my availability that I offer to an individual or to a group:

Recently I successfully completed a two-year training for experienced gestalt supervisors with Marguerita Spagnuolo Lobb. This took place in the Gestalt Institute of Italy.

I’d like to tell you what you can expect of gestalt supervision with me.

Here I like to use the word patient because it means: a person who is suffering.

My focus is in the interest of the patient rediscovering his/her functional spontaneity.

    The supervisory process includes:

Slowing down with and supporting the anxiety of the therapist.

Curiosity of the unique "dance" co-created in the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the patient asking about the patient's embodied presence; and curiosity about the therapist's embodied presence in response to this.

I affirm the intentionality of the therapist.

    Practicalities

You are welcome to ask me more about this supervisory support if you would like that please call me at 087 755 5680.

    Delivery: In person or on-line.

If you like to be part of a group of up to four, meetings are for two hours. The intentionality for the group includes safely interconnecting with one another as a support for your work with patients.

My fee, payable on the day is 80 euro per hour for individual supervision, while in a group 60 euro per person for two hours.

Location: My home address is also my workplace near Athlone in County Westmeath. My eircode is N37DH04.

You are invited to participate in my research study entitled “An exploration of how adult romantic relationships are influenced by early attachment styles. A therapist’s perspective”.

The purpose of this research is to explore how early attachment styles influence adult romantic relationships based on a therapist’s perspective of ‘lived experiences’ with clients. It will explore the effect of early attachment styles on long term single adults and analyse how different attachment styles impact on adult romantic relationships. Furthermore, it will examine the therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client with various attachment styles.

You are eligible to participate in this qualitative study if you are an accredited psychotherapist who holds either a degree or masters in counselling/psychotherapy and who has over five or more years’ experience working with clients with attachment issues. I am seeking psychotherapists who specialize in attachment theory, relationships, or couples counselling.

You will be invited to take part in a video call interview over a secure Zoom platform and an audio recording will be made. This is likely to last one hour approximately. Your participation in this study will be completely voluntary.

This research is being undertaken by Danika Hoare, who is a student on the Master of Science in Pluralistic Counselling and psychotherapy program with IICP.

If you are interested or would like more information on this study, please contact me by email at danikahoare@gmail.com or phone 087 438 7007.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Kind regards,

    Danika Hoare
