Aware joins mental health organisations worldwide calling for better understanding to eliminate social stigma and promote acceptance

Global theme of #BipolarTogether aims to connect, educate and inspire hope

    • 1-2% (up to 1 in 50 people) in Ireland experience a lifetime prevalence of bipolar disorder
    • Free Aware Living Well With Bipolar Disorder Programme open for registration

Ireland. Sunday 24th March 2024: In support of World Bipolar Day this Saturday 30th March, mental health organisation Aware will run a weeklong campaign under the global theme of #BipolarTogether which aims to highlight that we are all in this together - whether living with bipolar disorder, supporting a loved one or simply as an advocate for mental wellness. Affecting up to 40 million people worldwide (WHO, 2022), it is estimated that 1-2% of people in Ireland experience a lifetime prevalence of bipolar disorder. It is a complex and chronic condition characterized by extreme changes in mood and energy and can have a profound impact on every aspect of a person’s day-to-day life. World Bipolar Day is celebrated on the birthday of Vincent Van Gogh, who was posthumously diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. Its goal is to inspire a global shift in thinking that will eliminate social stigma and promote acceptance.

Throughout this week, Aware will aim to increase understanding of bipolar disorder by sharing lived experience perspectives, along with clinical expertise to educate the public on the causes, course and consequences of the condition. The organisation is encouraging people to visit www.aware.ie/worldbipolarday to engage with its wide range of resources to include free educational programmes specifically designed for people with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or those supporting a loved one.

Bipolar disorder is characterised by periods of low (depressed), high (elated) or mixed mood separated by periods of normal mood. While it can be difficult to diagnose, the first signs are often seen in late teens or early adulthood. Symptoms can be severe, but it is possible to live a healthy and productive life once the illness is effectively treated. Correct diagnosis of both bipolar disorder and the type of bipolar disorder a person is experiencing is essential for successful treatment.

Dr Susan Brannick, Clinical Director at Aware commented, “World Bipolar Day provides a great opportunity for mental health organisations worldwide to come together and bring global awareness to bipolar disorder, to educate and improve public understanding of the condition, as well as ensuring those with a diagnosis are familiar with the supports available to them. Unfortunately, stigma continues to be a challenge faced by many people living with bipolar disorder, and their families. The impact of stigma can be significant, affecting symptom levels, quality of life and even access to services. Stigma can be understood as lack of knowledge and/or negative beliefs which further reinforces the importance of awareness campaigns like World Bipolar Day.”

The course of bipolar disorder is very variable. If poorly managed or left untreated, it can result in worsening of symptoms and more frequent episodes that last longer. It is a condition that requires lifelong management - and knowledge is an essential first step. Empowering people to look after their mental health is an integral part of Aware’s work and the organisation has developed a programme specifically designed to address the needs of people living with bipolar disorder. The Aware Living Well With Bipolar Disorder Programme is an education and support programme that aims to provide participants with opportunities to understand and manage bipolar disorder effectively, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to live well. The free programme consists of one 90-minute session per week, over a period of eight weeks and is delivered by a mental health professional.

Commenting on the programme, Dr Brannick said: “A recent *survey in the UK indicated that 67% of people with bipolar disorder did not receive self-management advice when they were first diagnosed and 72% knew no one else with the condition. Self-management and knowing your own condition is a central part of living well with bipolar disorder. Aware’s Living Well With Bipolar Disorder programme offers participants the time to understand their own experiences, develop a wellness plan and meet others with shared experiences. I would really encourage anyone who would like to learn more about bipolar disorder and how to live well with the condition to consider registering for the upcoming phase of virtual and in-person programmes.”

For those supporting a loved one experiencing bipolar disorder or depression, Aware offers a Relatives & Friends Programme, a psycho-educational programme which was developed in response to a clear need for information, understanding and practical support. The free programme consists of six hours, over four weeks and aims to equip participants with the tools to understand and support a loved one, whilst maintaining their own health and wellbeing.

To engage with Aware’s resources on bipolar disorder or to register for Aware’s free Living Well With Bipolar Disorder Programme or Relatives & Friends Programme (both available in-person and virtually via Zoom), please visit www.aware.ie.

    IRISH SOCIETY OF JUNGIAN ANALYSTS

    in conjunction with the

    IRISH ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY ASSOCIATION

    Presents live on Zoom

    Thursday, 21st March 2024: 7.30pm – 9.00pm (Irish time) _____________________________________________________________________________________

HUMILITY, THE WAY OF THE EARTH

    Jim Fitzgerald
    Jungian Analyst

Through the profound experience which he recounts in the Red Book, Jung was compelled to understand the significance of Humility as a vital aspect of the economy of the human psyche. The talk will review the significance of Jung’s discovery and will apply it in order to understand how humanity has treated its home planet, the Earth, to its detriment. Because of the inflated attitude of modern humans, the sacred aspect of Earth, the Anima Mundi, is endangered and in a critical condition. Only a reappraisal of true humility may generate a positive outcome.

Jim Fitzgerald was born and raised in a small village in the south of Ireland. His academic background is in Ancient Classics and Byzantine Greek. After a career as a Primary school teacher in London, he trained as an analyst at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich. He is a past chairman of The C. G. Jung Analytical Psychology Club, London and a founding member and past chairman of The Guild of Analytical Psychologists. He is also a Senior Member of The Independent Group of Analytical Psychologists. He has a private practice in London and has lectured widely.

    The School of Psychotherapy
St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin 4

Have you ever sat in a group and wondered what is going on?

FOUNDATION COURSE in GROUP ANALYSIS 2024 Weekend Training Programme

We are often at a loss as to what might be going on in the dynamics of groups, especially when difficulties arise as they always do! This one-year course is open to people who are interested in deepening their understanding of group dynamics in both personal and professional settings, and learning about the potential applications of group analysis in clinical and/or organisational contexts. The Foundation Course is also the first step in the requirement towards the clinical training in Group Analytic Psychotherapy.

Drawing on theories of founding pioneer in Group Analysis, S.H. Foulkes, who was always of the view that individuals can only be understood in the context of their groups, this experiential foundation training develops an in-depth understanding of how group dynamics influence the individual and how the individual’s dynamics influence the group. The training also explores the ‘unconscious’ dynamics in groups.

This well regarded and long running training programme is offered in block format over nine weekends from September 2024 – June 2025

The main elements of the programme are experiential, both in small and large groups and also through theory, work discussion and case study groups.

If you are interested in finding out more, information briefings will be held via ZOOM and in- person from the School of Psychotherapy, St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin 4 in association with UCD School of Medicine Psychotherapy Programmes on:

The Unfolding Body: YogaSOMATICS Online Immersion

A YogaSOMATICS online immersion exploring the authentic nature of enfolding and coming towards ourselves, just as we are. In time, the enfolding will then naturally unfold to the new.

We will use inward-moving yoga “asanas” or gestures to awaken and spread out the back body in a spherical way through a process called Involution. Involution is a process of becoming Self in the womb with inward movements on a spiral with its own momentum.

From Involution, we will move outwards from centre to a process called Expansion: a sacred and symbolic gesture of opening which is a somatic communication of Becomingness. This is the willingness to move outward from your inner eyes.

Using these “forms-in-flow” to move deeply towards the heart; to fold in our experience towards new creation, awareness and new perception of our personal inner “universe”. This immersion will be a combination of floor and standing yoga gestures, somatic movement, meditation, relaxation and energetic work.

YogaSOMATICS is a contemporary perspective of yoga that is immediate, fluid and experiential. It bridges traditional yoga, modern somatics, meditative techniques and inquiry towards conciousness. YogaSOMATICS encourages sensing and deep listening to make inner contact with oneself and the energetic body.

Previous participants have described the practice as “transcendent”, “an exploratory space” and “expansive”.

My name is Jane McCarthy, and I am an accredited IAHIP member and have just returned from a charity work trip to Uganda with the wonderful Fields of Life organisation

I met a Fields of Life employee over there called George who has no access to trauma therapy materials even though he is working with people who have endured serious traumas. I'd like to send him over a box of trauma therapy books/resources and would be so grateful if you could donate any books or materials on trauma that you have found have helped you in your studies/practice.

If you email me at info@janemccarthy.ie

I can give you my address for postage, and if you're close by (I'm in Greystones, Co Wicklow) I can come and pick them up from you. Thank you so much!

The attached photo is of me and George, who I will be sending the books to. As well as working with the most vulnerable communities in East and North Uganda he is also a hydro-geologist, determining where it is viable for Fields of Life to drill sustainable wells.

He is an inspirational man who came from a poor background and grew up during a time when the LRA rebels were very active in his area, so his education was hard won. He has a thirst for learning, and during the time I spent with him, it was obvious to me that he understands the area of trauma very well. I hope you can support him to add literature and resources to his clinical experience of trauma and its impact.

    Thank you!
