    Irish Society of Jungian Analysts
    in conjunction with the
    Irish Analytical Psychology Association
    Presents live on Zoom

    Thursday, 7th November 2024: 19:3021:00 (Irish time)

Disease as the Shadow of the Body

    Wendy J Bratherton,
    Jungian Analyst

“This is your body, your greatest gift, pregnant with wisdom you do not hear, grief you thought was forgotten, and joy you have never known.”

    (M. Woodman and J.Mellick, Coming Home to Myself)

In this talk Wendy will show how engaging with disease as “shadow in the body” can enable us to make changes in our lives and find meaning in our suffering. Since disease is located in the body, if we want to engage with this aspect of shadow, we must delve deeply into the unconscious memories which are stored in the body. Jung appreciated the depth of connection between mind and body. Between 1934-9 he gave a series of lectures to colleagues where he warned of the dangers of becoming too intellectual and ignoring the body. Jung said, “The body is merely the visibility of the soul, the psyche: and the soul is the psychological experience of the body. So, it is really one and the same thing.” Wendy will look at the link between mind and body and focus on Jung’s concept of the psychoid psyche, together with some recent insights from neuroscience and outline some clinical examples.

Wendy Bratherton is a retired Jungian Analyst (SAP London) and a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist (CSTA). She was an Infant Observation Seminar Leader for 25 years and trained with Marion Woodman in BodySoul work. She has run Body Soul workshops with Marian Dunlea and helped with her online BodyDreaming Modules. She is a safe and Sound Protocol Provider, using sound to help heal trauma. She has contributed to Contemporary Jungian Analysis, ed. I.Alister & C. Hauke, Routledge 1998, and Jung’s Shadow Concept ed. C.Perry and R. Tower, Routledge 2023.

Awestruck in nature do we wander

    Cedrus Monte,
    Jungian Analyst

It could be argued that any true healing of neurosis would need to bring both spiritual life and the natural world to a new understanding. We are perhaps still trying to solve the problem of healing on a too personal, psychological level. Jung was deeply concerned over the loss of our connection with Nature, with the Great Mother. The word “matter” has become a purely intellectual concept. How different was the former image of matter — the Great Mother — which could convey profound emotional meaning. By wandering in the natural world, we begin to awaken to our primal, embodied connection to the Great Mother and feel the awe and gratitude that are ours to receive when we open to the beauty and mysteries that are an integral part of the natural world. In this way we might in part begin to heal, at the level of soul, an ever-increasing neurotic and collapsing world.

Cedrus Monte, Jungian Analyst, graduate of the C. G. Jung Institute (1996) Member of IAAP (emerita)/AGAP.  Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, she now lives and practices in Zurich, Switzerland. In addition to numerous papers included in Jungian anthologies, she has published CORPUS ANIMA: Reflections from the Unity of Body and Soul (Chiron Publications) and A MEMOIR OF MEMORIES: Remembering the Death of My Mother (Little Owl Press, Zurich; with accompanying podcast on Speaking of Jung, episode 68).

For anyone who is considering training in this area I highly recommend this particular one.“ - Elizabeth Cullen

Practitioner Certificate in Multi-Sensory Trauma Processing and EMDR Principles across the lifespan

This exciting training programme, utilises two core models to address and resolve trauma.

    1) Multi-Sensory Trauma Processing Model (MTP)

    2) Eye movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

MTP was initially created, by Dr Nancy Davis, after the tragic events of 911 in NYC to help reduce residual trauma symptoms in first responders and their families. It has since been expanded to address trauma with multiple other populations. Multi-Sensory Trauma Processing (MTP) focuses extensively on the sensory and somatic aspects of traumatic experiences and how blockages in these areas interrupt successful processing.

MTP combines many types of therapies:

    • Cognitive therapy
    • Visual imagery/hypnosis
    • Therapeutic stories
    • Narrative therapy
    • EMDR-bilateral stimulation
    • Client centered Rogerian therapy
    • Neuro linguistic programming

EMDR also relies on the power of bilateral stimulation (BLS) and has been widely researched and proven to be an effective therapy for trauma survivors. It is also useful in the psychotherapeutic treatment with a wide range of clients who struggle with debilitating psychological and physiological symptoms.

Both modalities are designed to assist with the processing of unresolved issues and to activate the client’s internal healing processes. Treatment may be a single session or may span multiple sessions. It may also be incorporated as an ongoing or intermittent part of the treatment being provided. Clinical decisions are made in accordance with the complexity of PTSD symptomology that the client is struggling with.

As this is a practitioner award, engagement in 20 clinical practice sessions, and 5 supervision sessions, are required. This supervision is included in the course.

This training is suitable for trainee and qualified play therapists, counsellors, psychotherapists, expressive arts therapists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals working within the range of psychotherapeutic modalities with clients of all ages.

Dr Nancy Davis is the former head of psychological services with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In addition to development the MTP model, she is also the creator of Therapeutic Stories that Teach and Heal Series (3rd Ed) and is an international trainer. Nancy will zoom in briefly during 2 sessions.

Dear pre-accredited and accredited fellow professionals,

Are you interested in joining a new supervision group ? They are found to be “great support”, giving “valuable perspectives from experiences of other group members” and “safely contracted spaces”.

This new group will meet on Thursdays at 7pm the first one will take place on 17th October.

I, Jim FitzGibbon, will be the facilitator. I am a supervisor accredited with IAHIP. I am a gestalt psychotherapist. I recently completed further supervision training for supervisors at the Gestalt Institute at HCC Italy.

Delivery will be on-line with approximately ten meetings per year. My fee is 60 euros per person for each two hour session.
