A Systemic Approach to working with Fathers and Men: Evening Lecture Series.

This Course is designed for professionals who would like to develop or enhance their skills in working with families.  In this short course you will learn to reflect, consider and learn some theory about working clinically with families. This course will encourage you to consider the relational environment of families’ lives and relationships and your own approach to family work.

Course Requirements: The course will invite active engagement by participants.  Course applicants should ideally be working in a setting where they are involved with couples and/ or families in some way. CPD Points will apply

Tuesday October 8th Presenter: Michael Flanagan, HSE Clinical Nurse

  A Systemic Approach to working with Fathers and Men

On completion of this module participants will developed an understanding of:

  • The reciprocal nature of relationships
  • Culturally and familial internalized gender roles
  • Useful approaches for engaging men in therapeutic conversations

Tuesday October15th Presenter: Fergus Hogan, Social Worker and Family Therapist WIT

 Gender Fathers and Men  

 On completion of this module participants will have gained understanding of:

  • Gender roles
  • Strengthening Families through including Fathers
  • Supporting Fathers who are marginalised

Tuesday October 22nd Presenter: Corry de Jongh, Clinical Psychologist

Men and Conflict

On completion of this module participants will have developed:

  • An understanding of the etiology of conflict and violence in couple and family relationships
  • Ideas for de escalating conflict and distress
  • Ideas for working with men / fathers in relation to conflict

Tuesday October 29th Presenter: Aileen Tierney, Family Therapist and CEO Clanwilliam Institute

The Influence of the professional/context on the conversation

On completion of this module participants will be able to:

  • Consider how their own values and beliefs around men and fathers impact on how they work
  • Reflect on how they have come to think about men and fathers and the influence of the personal, societal and work systems
  • Develop skills for reflective practice and for engaging with the systems in which they work to create inclusive practices around men and fathers

Duration: 4 Tuesday evenings 18:30-20:30.   Start Date: 8th October 2019

Facilitators:

Dr. Aileen Tierney is CEO of Clanwilliam Institute, the only family therapy Institute in Ireland and is director of Academic programmes In Clanwilliam. Aileen is a registered family therapy Supervisor, has over 30 years practice experience and is a CORU accredited Social worker

Michael Flanagan works as a clinical nurse specialist in community adult mental health for the HSE.   He provides Systemic Psychotherapy at Clanwilliam Institute to couples, families and individuals. Michael has extensive experience of working with couples, specifically post-separation challenges for couples. He also has particular interest in the power dynamics that underlie much couples conflict.

Fergus Hogan is a qualified social worker and family therapist who lectures full time in systemic theory and family therapy practice at Waterford Institute of Technology. His main research interests and publications are in the area of men’s lives, masculinities and fatherhood.

Corry de Jongh is a qualified clinical psychologist, a registered family therapist and supervisor, with a MBS Management Consulting and a MPhil in Peace Studies.

She has over 40-years’ experience in couples and family therapy, teaching supervising and speaking at national and international conferences. In particular, extensive experience with couples where violence is a presenting problem.
