Embracing The Shadow by Jasbinder Garnermann
On a personal level, we experience the shadow as the part of ourselves that runs contrary to our conscious ideals and persona. This part contains our secret history, the shame, rage, guilt and fear that we have repressed throughout our development. We project this part on to other people, cultures and countries, and especially on to animals. In our dreams the shadow appears as sleazy, dangerous or unpleasant characters who threaten us. But the shadow also contains our instincts, drives and the collective inheritance of our species. Jung termed it the two-million-year-old self within us and he believed that it contained the key to age-old strategies of adaptation and the fulfillment of archetypal drives. Now, as we stand at a cross-roads for our species, we need to urgently come to terms with our shadow side and to become aware of it’s play on the individual level and also on the global scale.
