My name is Amina Samee Bari. I am a fourth year, MSc student of Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy at University College Cork (UCC) and Turning Point Institute (TPI).
I am currently engaged in a research project as part of a dissertation for my Master’s Degree. The study is entitled: Psychotherapists’ Experience of Counter-transference when Working with Older Adults. I hope to carry out this research in order to gain an in-depth understanding of how therapists experience counter-transference, what their experience of counter-transference with older clients has been like.
The research project will explore psychotherapists’ experience of counter-transference when working with an older client population (above 65 years of age). The findings from this study will provide a basis for application to an Irish context.
The objectives of this research are:
- To gain rich, in-depth descriptions, through interviews, of the lived, subjective experience of psychotherapists’ countertransference when working with older clients. These descriptions will provide an understanding and knowledge base of the phenomena of countertransference, what the experience is like with older adults and how it may hinder or facilitate the therapeutic relationship.
- To delineate the participants’ experiences, how they present themselves, in order to arrive at an understanding of what the experience is like. The knowledge generated will reflect the phenomenon as experienced ‘first-hand’.
- To unearth aspects of the psychotherapists’ experience of countertransference with older adults that earlier research may not have completely explored.
I am seeking participants to take part in individual, face-to-face, audio-taped interviews. The interviews will be approximately forty-five minutes to one hour long and will be recorded for research purposes only. Any information pertaining to this interview will be confidential and your name will be changed to preserve your anonymity. Your participation is purely on a voluntary basis. You are free to withdraw from the research study at any time without any consequences.
