INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN A PSYCHOTHERAPY RESEARCH STUDY

Dear IAHIP Member,

My name is Owen Smith and I am a fourth year student on the M.Sc. in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy at Turning Point Training Institute (TPTI) and University College Cork (UCC). In partial fulfillment for the award of M.Sc. there is an academic requirement to conduct research in the field of psychotherapy and counselling.

I am inviting you as a result, to participation in my upcoming research study entitled:

FLOURISHING: THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AMONG PSYCHOTHERAPISTS IN IRELAND

Although motivations for choosing psychotherapy and counselling as a profession are varied, little has been written on how psychotherapists blossom and thrive in their practice. Furthermore working with issues of despair can be considered strenuous with many psychotherapists suffering from stress and burnout. In attempting to understand such challenges, one might ask how psychotherapists develop a truly fruitful career and obtain profound enjoyment from sometimes agonising work. This research study aims to explore, amongst psychotherapists in Ireland, their experiences of psychological flourishing in their practice.

In order to take part in the study, participants will need to be accredited with IAHIP as a humanistic and integrative psychotherapist with at least three years post qualification experience and practice with clients.

Should you choose to take part, you will be invited to attend an interview at a mutually agreed time and venue, which will take approximately 45 minutes to one hour. Your participation is completely voluntary and if you can choose to discontinue at any stage.

Furthermore, a participant Information Sheet and Consent Form are both available for you, if required. If you would like to receive a copy of these, or of course if you have any queries or questions concerning this study, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or my research supervisor at the contact details provided below.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time in reading this and hopefully to considering taking part in this study.

Yours sincerely,

Owen Smith
