Tendering for Supervision

Supervision for the Specialist Palliative Care Nursing Teams in Counties Waterford, Wexford, and South Tipperary has been in existence for the past number of years.

We are now proceeding with a tendering process for this service.

Deadline for receipt of submissions: Friday, July 19th at 4:00 pm

For Whom The Specialist Palliative Care Nursing Teams in Counties Waterford, Wexford, and South Tipperary.
How many sessions Six Supervision sessions per team per year (18 sessions in total).
Who is involved The Clinical Nurse Managers (CNM 3) (3), the Clinical Nurse Specialists

(CNSp) in the community (22), the Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSp) in the acute hospitals (6).

How are the sessions devised Supervision  is held for 6 sessions per team (Waterford, Wexford and South Tipperary) per year
How long do the sessions last 9-5
Where do the sessions happen For the South Tipperary Team, in their team offices in Clonmel.

For the Waterford Team in their offices on the grounds of University Hospital Waterford.

For the Wexford Team in Ely Hospital in Wexford.

How is the day planned The Manager has her own hour with the facilitator.

The CNSp’s (community and hospital) then have the rest of the day with the facilitator either in smaller groups with combined hospital and community staff or the community and hospital staff have separate sessions on the same day.

The layout of the day has been decided by the individual team’s preferences.

Amount attending per session 1 CNM3, 5-8 CNSp’s in the community (depending on the size of the team) and 1-2 CNSp’s from the hospital.

Average  7-11 in a day’s session

Reason for  Supervision
  •   Time out from the demanding clinical workload
  •   Time to discuss issues that have developed in work
  •  Reflection on how a particular case went
  •  Team support and camaraderie
  •  Shining the spotlight on particular issues that have developed for that particular service
  •  Designated time for the team members
  •  To provide a safe environment in which to air sensitive, complex issues
Benefits to date from this service
  • All of the above as listed.
  •  Each team that have availed of supervision have found it an invaluable resource that they look forward to and use to help maintain and sustain them in a challenging work environment.
Potential expansion of the service The Carlow/Kilkenny service both in the community and hospital do not currently attend supervision. They may be added to supervision at a later date. This would then include another 6 sessions in Kilkenny (St.Lukes Hospital) for approx. 7 nurses.
Professional requirements for the role
  • A current member of the IAHIP
  •  Previous experience supervising specialist staff
  •  Access to own transport
  •  Cost per session which includes mileage/overnight if required.
