The Limerick Social and Health Education Programme is an important collaboration between a number of Limerick Groups/Agencies and the Social and Health Education Project (SHEP) which is funded by Limerick Regeneration, Mid-West Regional Drugs & Alcohol Forum and the HSE. It is an innovative, social-inclusion-focussed, interagency, long-term programme dedicated to promoting individual/community health and well-being and contributing to social capital and social engagement in Limerick and its environs. Since the programme commenced in 2010, seventeen training courses have been organised with over 270 people being involved. A recent independent evaluation concluded that there is ‘….a very strong agreement that SHEP in Limerick is delivering a training programme that is at once unique and greatly valued.’ It also concluded that ‘… the SHEP programme portfolio is achieving real and meaningful change in the lives of many of the training participants.’
SHEP, in partnership with the Limerick Steering Committee, is now commencing a selection process to identify a small number of suitably qualified people, from the greater Limerick area, to join the SHEP Training Panel – for two areas of SHEP Training. This is an important opportunity which may not arise again for some time. What we are looking for is people, first and foremost, who are passionate about this work and who want to contribute to the development of the programme into the long-term. We are looking for people who are committed to the ethos and the values of SHEP; who are (or have the capacity to be) excellent group facilitators, and who will be good role models for participants. We are looking for people who would see this not simply as an opportunity to facilitate groups from time to time (for which there is payment), but to contribute more generally to the long-term development of the programme. It is important to note that paid training opportunities will be occasional and limited.
In the case of both courses, SHEP is open to offering (unpaid) apprenticeship opportunities – accordingly,we are open to receiving expressions of interests from people who do not meet all of the usual requirements.
